The most-viewed music video of all time, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” which has over 5 billion views was hacked.
The music video of this hit song was briefly taken offline until the problem was fixed.
The video clip’s cover image was changed with a photo showing a group of men wearing masks and pointing guns.
The hackers, being referred as Prosox and Kuroi’sh, altered some of the videos’ titles with their own messages, including a call of “free Palestine” along with their own nicknames.
Lots of other music videos of popular singers like Chris Brown, Shakira, DJ Snake, Selena Gomez, Drake, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift posted by the music hosting service Vevo have also been hacked and defaced. Some of the videos with defaced titles and thumbnail images are still available.
According to a spokeswoman for YouTube, when they first saw such unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, they immediately disabled the access in consultation with their partner until they investigate the issue what it really is.
According to Vevo sources, they are now working to reinstate all videos affected and their catalogue to be restored to full working order. They are still in process of investigation to trace out the source of the breach.
Of course, Vevo earlier experienced a similar kind of breach in September 2017 when some of its files were stolen and leaked online.
A twitter account is believed to be one of the hackers had posted message as: “It’s just for fun, I just use [the] script ‘youtube-change-title-video’ and I write ‘hacked’.”
“Don’t judge me I love YouTube,” it added.
It’s still not clear how did hackers gain access to individual accounts or there might be a wider breach in Vevo accounts.
Many cyber-security experts find this very astonishing that the hackers had been able to gain access so easily. To upload or alter video content with code, you need an authorization token.
There might be chances that the hackers could have found a way out for getting the authorization or they are being economical with the facts, or they could have obtained the permissions in some other way.
But if the claims made by hackers are to be believed, one of them disclosed that they used a “script” to alter the video titles. After the occurrence of such an incident, there’s a wider discussion among cyber-security experts for strong measures.
Cyber-attack has now become an international concern and high-profile breaches of such scale could lead to many serious issues.
