Miss Universe 2017: South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters wins crown

Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was declared the winner of the Miss Universe 2017 crown. The 66th Miss Universe event was held on Sunday 26th November 2017, at Las Vegas, Nevada.  It was last year’s winner Miss Universe 2016, Iris Mittenaere, who crowned the new beauty queen. At the pageant, there were 90 contestants representing their respective countries around the world.

Demi-Leigh is 22 years old, imparts training on self-defense for women, comes from the Western Cape Province and holds a management degree from North-West University. In a video, on the Miss Universe website, she is seen talking about how she developed a passion for self-defense after she was hijacked and held at gunpoint, a month after she bagged the Miss South Africa title. Apparently, she draws inspiration from her disabled sister. The first runner-up of the Miss Universe 2017 pageant was 22-year old Miss Columbia, Laura Gonzàlez. Since the age of 16, it has been her desire to become an actress. She is known to have graduated from a performing arts center and shifted to Bogotà for better career opportunities.

Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett, was declared the second runner-up. She is 21 years old, a model by profession and enrolled at the University of West Indies for a course in Marketing.

It was during the swimsuit and evening gown rounds that Nel-Peters managed to impress the judges. She was amongst one of the Top 5 contestants along with Miss Jamaica, Miss Thailand, Miss Columbia and Miss Venezuela.


During the final round, the 3 contestants were posed with the question ‘What quality in yourself are you most proud of and how will you apply that quality to your time as Miss Universe?’. Miss Africa replied “As Miss Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual. Miss Universe is a woman who has overcome her fears and is able to help other women surpass theirs as well”. It seems the judges were bowled by her answer and awarded her the prized crown.

Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett, said “It was her drive and determination. She also added that she was part of a foundation that is concerned with the welfare of deaf people. She recognized the Miss Universe platform to be a great platform for helping towards the cause”. Miss Colombia, Laura Gonzalez, answered “She was passionate about everything she does. Additionally, she mentioned that she gives her all to every situation. She said that this has been her approach as an actress, and Miss Columbia and will continue having the same attitude if she wins Miss Universe”.

The hosts of the show were Ashley Graham and Steve Harvey. Some artists who performed at the glittering event were Rachel Platten and Fergie.
